Mediterranean Review Spreads
from: Valieri FortieThe Mediterranean diet vs. low carb diet
The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a study on a two
year trial that studied obese people and the effects of one of three diets
on their weight loss efforts. The diets were low-fat, restricted-calorie;
Mediterranean, restricted-calorie, or low-carbohydrate,
non-restricted-calorie.
The outcome was that Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets can be good
alternatives to low-fat diets.
The low-carbohydrate diet was not calorie restricted and aimed to include
20 grams of carbohydrates daily for the two month induction phase to a
increase of up to 120 grams a day to maintain weight loss. The actual
number of calories, protein and fat were not curtailed. The diet was based
on the Atkins diet.
The low-fat diet was restricted calorie and based on the American Heart
Association guidelines. The calorie count was 1500 per day for women and
1800 per day for men. The intake of cholesterol was 300mg per day, 10% of
the calories came from saturated fat and 30% of calories came from other
fat. The participants were told to limit their intake of additional fats,
sweets and high-fat snacks.
The trials were held in Israel between July 2005 and June 2007. The
guidelines for applying and being accepted into the study were an age 40
to 65 years old with a BMI (body mass index) of at least 27 or having Type
II diabetes, heart disease if their age and BMI did not fit the
guidelines.
Participants in the study were weighed monthly, ///without shoes and height
was measured, at\\\ the start of the study to the nearest millimeter to
determine BMI. Blood pressure and waist size were also measured monthly.
Maximum weight loss happened from the first to the sixth month. There was
a maintenance phase from the seventh to twenty-fourth month. Everyone in
the study lost weight but the figures were larger in the low-carbohydrate
and Mediterranean diet groups.
Improvement in cholesterol levels were noted in all groups with the
greatest improvement in the low carbohydrate group.
The two year study proved that Mediterranean and low carbohydrate diets
are just as effective as low fat diets for weight loss and just as safe.
These two groups also showed beneficial metabolic effects. It also showed
that a low carbohydrate and/or non-restricted calorie diet may be good fro
those who will not follow a low calorie diet.
